How are carbon fiber shaped parts processed and produced?

Author:

There are many product parts available that are made from carbon fiber. Most parts are not standard plate and tube products. There are some curvatures and shapes required in application scenarios. Carbon fiber composites have good plasticity and the resin can be molded in a variety of complex shapes. Currently, there is a high demand for these shaped parts in custom applications.

For products with complex shaped parts, if you want to realize them with carbon fiber, you need to design 3D drawings at an early stage and make a mold for special processing based on the drawings. Only after the mold is produced can you perform a series of processes such as carbon fiber pre-soaking and lay-up, curing and molding, and finally producing the finished carbon fiber shaped part. In the early stages of high precision shaped parts, more calculations and experiments are needed to compile the best design and processing methods to produce the required composite carbon fiber shaped part. During this period, any aspect of the design, raw material selection, mold quality, and construction quality control needs to be strictly enforced. Any negligence in the process will affect the final quality of the product.

For flat parts, it is much simpler to use carbon fiber plates for CNC machining directly. In practice, carbon fiber shaped parts need to be considered for installation and connection with other material parts. In the design process, it is best to use an integrated design structure and to optimize the structure as much as possible. Due to the poor toughness of carbon fiber composites and their lack of resistance to mechanical friction, metal connectors are often required to achieve a combined structure between parts.

The improvement of the performance of carbon fiber shaped parts is very obvious. At present, there is a lot of demand for carbon fiber shaped parts in industries such as drones, automotive parts, and robots.
